Laos strengthens regional links, connecting East-West Logistics corridors

Within the framework of Vietnam – Laos Expo 2022 taking place from 3-7/11, morning 4/11, in Vientiane capital (Laos), Saigon Newport Corporation in collaboration with the Trade Promotion Agency, The Economic Department of the Ministry of Defense of Vietnam and the Trade Promotion Department of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Laos organized the workshop "Strengthening regional links, connecting east-west logistics village routes" to discuss the potential of logistics development in Laos and connecting markets in the region.

Attending the workshop were representatives of relevant ministries, as well as more than 80 enterprises and investors from Vietnam, Laos and Thailand.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Bui Van Quy - Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport Corporation said that with great potential in connecting goods in East Asia and West Asia, with a central location between China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar, Laos has many opportunities to develop into a regional transportation hub.

As the leading port and logistics operator in Vietnam, Saigon Newport is well aware of its responsible role, as well as its great opportunity in developing logistics connection activities between Laos and Vietnam through the East-West Logistics corridors.

Mr. Bui Van Quy emphasized: "Through the workshop, we will have the opportunity to exchange information, share experiences and offer optimal logistics solutions for customers. Since then, there have been recommendations and proposals to strengthen regional links, develop East-West Logistics corridors, contributing to ensuring a smooth and efficient supply chain of goods".

In recent years, the logistics industry in Laos has made strong changes with the participation of many international companies along with improving the quality and standardization of freight and warehousing services. The development of the Kunming – Vientiane high-speed railway and the advantages of connecting waterways through the Mekong river system, roads and border gates connecting to Vietnam, Thailand and Laos have great potential to develop East-West logistics corridors connecting goods circulation, ensure the smooth functioning of the economy, contributing to the socio-economic development of Laos in particular and the Mekong subregion in general.

At the workshop, Mr. Somvixay Vongthirath – Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency, Ministry of Industry and Trade of Laos said that the Lao and Vietnamese governments are always interested in creating conditions to promote trade, services and convenient transportation of goods through air, road and waterway for sustainable and stable development. This workshop plays an important role in promoting the potential of regional connectivity, connecting the East-West logistics corridors of Laos.

Mr. Somvixay Vongthirath affirmed: "Laos does not have sea transport services, but Vietnam has supported Laos in connecting transport through Vietnam's seaports, and at the same time called on Vietnamese businesses with potential to invest and do business in Laos. Currently, the potential for transport and trade connections of Laos is still very abundant, especially through the Laos - China railway can transport goods to the 3rd country in a convenient and efficient way".

At the workshop, participants listened and discussed topics such as: Current situation, potential for logistics development in Laos and market connectivity in the region"; Laos logistics facilities connect regional goods" and Saigon NewPort promote the advantage of connecting and developing Laos - Vietnam logistics services".

At the end of the workshop, there was a signing ceremony between Saigon Newport and the Lao International Freight Forwarders Association (LITFA) and the Vietnam Business Association in Laos (AVILA).
